Soft, Durable, Sustainable: The must-have tights by Swedish Stockings.

The Prelude:

About two years ago, I was out shopping for an upcoming business trip. While trying on a black leather skirt, the sales associate gave me a pair of black stockings from a brand that I had never heard of before- Swedish Stockings. As I started pulling them up, I froze in mid-motion. OMG these stocking are sooooooo soft!! I thought to myself. It felt like my legs were being wrapped in a silk blanket. And not only did they feel great, but they looked great too.

Despite their look and feel, I still wasn’t sure if I should buy them. 1) I was pretty sure that I already had a pair of tights at home and 2) my stockings always rip. So I wasn’t sure if I wanted to invest in a new pair that was mostly likely going to break during my trip. I mean who wants to show up and deal with ripped stockings. While the sales associate assured me that these stockings were of “really great quality”, I couldn’t help but think suurrree, so were the 20 other pairs of ripped stockings I for some reason still have in my drawer.

So I did what every other person would do. I bought them. Not only that, but I also decided to travel in them. #rationalmindset

Finally, the big travel day arrived. I wrapped my legs in my new silky stockings and packed an extra pair in my hand luggage, just in case the new ones might break. I jumped into the taxi and off I went. I made it through security and onto the plane without a scratch, but as I wiggled around in my seat to get comfortable (and let’s be real, who can really get comfortable on an airplane in Economy) I scraped my leg against the side the armest. FML. I looked down at my legs and too my surprise, the stockings hadn’t ripped #YES. My journey continued with a train, followed by a bus, then a cogwheel train up a Swiss mountain and then a final hike up to the hotel where I was staying. As I walked into the hotel with the reliefthat I had made it in one piece, I paused and looked down at my stockings and the final score was:

Swedish Stockings:1, Taxi/Airport/Plane/Train/Bus/Train Again:0. To my complete surprise,

the stockings had made it- no rips, no tears, nothing. From that day forward, Swedish Stockings became the source for all of my stockings and leggings.

But wait, the best is yet to come! So, refill your drink, stretch your legs and keep reading.

The Point:

The quality and feel of Swedish Stockings products is unparalleled (I should know, I’ve put them through the ringer). And no, this isn’t a sponsored post. However, there is more to the story. Not only are Swedish Stockings products soft, comfortable and durable, they are also sustainable. Yup, you heard that right folks. Swedish Stockings is the world’s first sustainable hosiery brand. When I first read this, I thought “oh, cool” but what does that actually mean?

Well, I have apparently been living under a rock because I had no idea that the nylon yarn commonly used to make stockings is a petroleum-based product whose manufacturing process creates a lot of carbon emissions. Additionally, “each year, two billion pairs of tights are produced, worn once and then discarded” Aiding in the textile industry being one of the largest polluting industries #Sh*t

Swedish Stockings was created to change this by trying to become the world’s first circular hosiery brand. What is Circularity, do you ask? Circularity is the concept of designing and manufacturing products with the end-of-life in mind. In an non-circular economy, a pair of tights would be made of virgin petroleum based synthetics like nylon, While they aren’t there yet they, they’re working hard on it. And, in the meantime, are making big steps in how they can produce more circular products.

So how do they make their tights? They create the pantyhose from both pre and post-consumer nylon waste (such as old sports clothes, fishing nets, and old plastic bottles). This is a process that is a lot less harmful to the environment than traditional nylon production, as the nylon used is essentially waste that would have ended up in landfills and in our oceans (it also doesn’t require any new petroleum extraction, which is also bad for the environment).

Additionally, they are consistently looking for innovative and cleaner ways to produce their stockings. Some of the really cool innovation/projects include:

  • Keep it 100 tights- The world’s first fully recycled pair of pantyhose, meaning both the nylon and elastane in these tights are 100% recycled.

  • Cecilia Innovation tights- These stockings are made from castor beans! A totally renewable resource that does not require high amounts of water, nor does it subtract arable land for food uses.

  • Polly innovation tights- These stockings are made from recycled PET plastic bottles and are 100% emission free.

  • Innovation table- These are tables are made from customer's old tights! Talk about circularity #sustainabilityswoon. Each Innovation Table contains between 80 and 350 pairs of tights.

  • The recycling club- If you send in 3 or more pairs of pantyhose ( from any brand, by the way!), Swedish Stockingswill recycle them for you by grinding them down into filler material in fiberglass tanks. Not only can you feel good about saving your sad old stockings from the landfill, but you can also feel good about the 10% discount codeyou’ll get! #yay
