The Prelude:
As the raindrops continue to hit the windows, I look outside and realise that it might as well be evening. There seems to be no end to the dark clouds and the speed in which the rain is failing is showing no signs of slowing down. While these days can be quite cozy if you are inside (under a blanket with a warm drink in hand), life, unfortunately, continues in spite of the rain. You will have to (at some point) face the cold and wet outdoors.
Growing up, I spent quite some time in London. The world’s capital of rainy, dreary weather (although I would argue The Netherlands could easily earn that title). Despite this reputation, I loved it when it rained. Obviously, puddles, or rather jumping in puddles, were always a highlight. However, I had another secret- a secret that made these rainy days extraordinary. The secret was that I had a magic umbrella. While it seemed like a normal (but super cute) brightly-coloured, flower-printed umbrella, when I opened it, it could make me fly. It never took me anywhere, it just lifted me ever so slightly, giving me butterflies in my stomach and a smile on my face. It also wasn’t all the time that it would make me fly, it was just during certain moments over the course of a walk that it would give a little “pick-me-up” (pun intended).
I had my magic umbrella for years, and it never let me down during those rainy London days. I am not sure what happened to it, but I like to think that someone else found it and got to experience the same, perfectly timed magic that I did.
The Point:
Whether or not you believe in magical umbrellas, we all need something that makes us smile when we have to go outside on those dark, rainy days.
