The Prelude:
You know how you sometimes feel like there is a person, or group of people, that are just out to ‘get you’? It feels like their sole purpose in life is to annoy you and that they go out of their way to do so. Well, I have that. With monkeys. Yes, monkeys. Now I am not saying that the whole species is out to get me, it just seems that all the monkeys I have met to go out of their way to piss me off. I wont share all of my monkey related stories now, but I will tell you one.
As a little girl I accessorised any and all outfits with a headband- dresses, shorts, spandex, sweaters, you name it. I couldn’t tell you why I loved headbands so much, all I knew was that my outfits felt incomplete without one- like forgetting to put on a lace-trimmed sock or a patent Mary Jane. Upon reflection, I think the reason I loved headbands so much was probably because it was the closest thing I could get to a crown on my head.
Anyhow, continuing on to my monkey story- it was Kenya, around 1993. We were on a safari and had stopped at a monkey sanctuary to observe some monkeys. As we were looking up at them, one of the monkeys jumped from a tree, swung onto a rope and then SNATCH! yanked the headband right off of my head, scurrying back in to the camouflage of the canopy, loot in hand. Before it completely disappeared, it turned to look back at me, giving me that ‘nana-nana popo’ look, daring me to come after it. I was completely dumbfounded. “THAT MONKEY TOOK MY HEADBAND!” I screamed, feeling a combination of betrayal and confusion. How could such a cute animal be so mean? And, what in the world did a monkey need with a headband? I never saw that headband again and I never got the answers to my questions. While I try to console myself with the thought that there is a monkey out there looking really cute, I have never been able to ‘forgive and forget’.
Despite the (warning: sarcastic remark) ‘traumatic’ experience of losing a headband, I never stopped wearing them. Even when they weren’t trendy, I have never given up on headbands and their ability to make me feel like a princess.
The Point :
Headbands, despite being a simple concept, can get overwhelming real fast. So, I’ll try and break it down into something more manageable.
Step 1: Why are you wearing a headband?
The first step is to think about the purpose of your headband: Are you trying to dress-up an outfit? Make a statement? Or pull your hair away from you face? Once you’ve figured this out, you can refer to our handy-dandy headband ‘cheat-sheet’ to see what type you should wear:
Step 2: Casual or fancy?
Headbands can be made from several materials; plastic, silk, cotton, etc. and have different styles; embellished, printed, ‘accessorised’ (meaning a headband with a bow, cat ears) etc. Choose the material and style based on if are going for a more casual or elegant look.
For example:
Plastic ➾ Casual
Silk ➾ Elegant
Sparkly➾ Elegant
Step 3: Rock it
Let’s face it, pulling something off like a headband is all about how you carry yourself and the energy you bring to the outfit. So, when you finally choose which headband you want to buy or wear, just remember to ‘rock it’.
