Happy Feet: how to (painlessly) transition your feet back to the "new normal"

The Prelude:

My toes cringed fearing the unavoidable oncoming pain. “Don’t do it Gloria! Just listen to Jay!” What was supposed to be a relaxing evening with my husband watching Modern Family suddenly turned into a night of (literally) painful memories. Gloria was convinced she could walk around Disneyland in heels all day and, as it turns out, Jay was right and Gloria ended up wearing Mickey Mouse slippers during their Disneyland adventure. Lesson learned.

I had learned my lesson a few years earlier when I had been part of a team organizing a business development event. This multi-day event consisted of business meetings and presentations during the day, culminating in a gala dinner on the last evening. Small and large business owners/representatives, as well as royalty, would be attending. So, I needed to look amazing. I had my outfit for the gala dinner and was now in the process of narrowing down my options for the day. I settled on a black dress paired with black heels with a little bow on the side. It was elegant and not to over- (or under-) stated.

I’ll take a little pause here in case you haven’t had a chance to process what I wrote: heels.

I was going to wear heels to an all-day event that I helped organise and was therefore, by default, going to be running around the hotel all day making sure things were going smoothly. At the time, I didn’t think twice about my choice in shoes. I never wore heels to the office (wonder why), so this would be my chance to wear them. Also, in my defence, according to all tv shows- who can’t wear heels all day?

Boy was I wrong! Within a few hours, my feet were in more pain than I could ever describe. It ended up with me having to take off my shoes when no one was looking, in order to run down a hallway and then quickly put them back on before anyone noticed. True story. It took my feet weeks to recover from this. (I will spare you the details of how they looked. Just rest assured, it wasn’t pretty). From that day onwards I promised myself that if I had to wear heels to work, or rather convinced myself , to bring high heels to work, then I would also bring a pair of flats with me in a tote bag. And that is one of the few promises to myself I have managed to keep.

The Point:

As life starts to get back to the “new normal” and we are able to go outside more (and maybe even at some point back to the office), your first instinct after living in slippers for the past few months will be to put on something nice.

This might mean heels. Please don’t.

This may also mean wearing a cute pair of open toe shoes. If you are like me and have no talent in painting nails and haven’t had the chance to get your nails done, then please don’t.

So, what should you wear?

MULES

Why? Well, because they are:

  • Like slippers so they will help you transition into ‘new normal’ life

  • Will hide your unpedicured toes

  • A bit more summery than flats

  • Trendy at the moment (probably more of an excuse...)

Here are some of my favorite mules to help you transition in to the outside world:

Happy trotting,
