The Prelude:
Our suitcases were packed and ready to go. One was filled with snorkelling gear and the other two with swimsuits, more swimsuits and a few coverups. Filling two suitcases with swimsuits wasn't that difficult as my parents, sister and I were going to be living in them the coming days and, according to my logic at least, I would need a different one for every ‘mood’ I might be in (and as a pre-teen I had a lot of different ‘moods’).
Fast forward a plane and boat ride later and we finally sailed up to the most magical place. Located in the Caribbean off the coast of Panama, this small island consisted of 6 stand-alone huts over the water, a large (also over the water) restaurant and a handful of hammocks. That was it. Nothing else.
We were so excited to be spending the coming days on the island that before the boat had even docked my sister and I were racing to see who would get into their swimsuit and in the water first. Unfortunately, the decision on which swimsuit to wear resulted in me not winning that race. Nonetheless, I did win the contest of who looked the cutest and, let’s face it, that is the one that really mattered!
The following days were spent snorkelling around the island spotting the most beautifully colored fish and coral one can imagine. I don’t think our hair, or swimsuits, even really managed to fully dry at any point during our stay, and our backs definitely ended up being tanner then our fronts. In other words: PERFECT VACATION.
To this day, we still dream about going back to the island and reconnecting with the nature as we experienced it then. And, to be honest, despite being an adult, I suspect I would bring more swimsuits next time around.
Until next time Kwadule <3
The Point:
We all want to look cute in our swimsuits and (ideally) need different swimsuits for different occasions/moods as well as to prevent tan lines. These are all givens on your swimsuit ‘check list’.
My invitation to you is to add one more item/question to your check list (and I will even help you with achieving it):
‘Is this swimsuit sustainable?”
You’re probably thinking, “what the #@$% is a sustainable swimsuit?” and “where can I get one?” Well, let me try to answer this for you:
A sustainable swimsuit can be made in many ways. I won’t go into all the variations and ways of making a swimsuit sustainable now (however am happy to speak with you if you have questions about this!) as I want to focus on a sustainable fabric one can use to make a swimsuit. ECONYL® is one of these fabrics. It uses waste such as industrial plastic, waste fabric and fishing nets from the oceans and recycles it into a new nylon yarn. Several brands are now using this recycled nylon to make their swimsuits as it is the same quality as virgin nylon. Super cool right?!?!. (If you want to know more about it click here)
In terms of where you can get one, well I have done all the hard work for you and linked 4 sustainable swimsuits brands below, as well as some of my favorite pieces from these brands. I hope that you find a cute and sustainable swimsuit that helps (indirectly or directly) the beautiful environment where you are most likely wearing it.
